in Marijuana Addiction

In reading the comments on this blog, many people have different ideas as to what Marijuana addiction means on a personal, and cultural level.

Many people here are personally affected by marijuana addiction and abuse. Some suffer themselves, and others suffer indirectly through family members or friends abusing cannabis.

Culturally, we seem to express marijuana addiction as a “lesser addiction” than many of the “hard drugs” like cocaine, heroin, or pcp.   Because of the different symptoms and behaviors compared to other addictions, the hazardous effect of marijuana is sometimes downplayed.  Many believe that marijuana addiction simply doesn’t exist – it certainly causes backlash and disbelief.

I would like to get everyones personal view of marijuana addiction. This topic is currently being discussed in the Marijuana Support Forums. You can go directly to Defining Marijuana Addiction. OR

Admin,

I think you are getting comments from groups that either want to promote marijuana use, or at least dont want it labelled as a problem. Hence all those that coem here and try to stress that dop eis not a problem. A site such as this indicates warnings about marijuana use, hence why they are doubting what is said here by some.

Of course there are groups that are pro-marijuana. Actually such groups are less pro-pot and more anti-prohibition.

Delve into your history books, boys and girls. Remember the 18th Amendment? For those that choose to forget history class (Don’t blame you, really), it made alcohol illegal in 1919.
Ten years later there was the stock market crash and the heyday of the gangster. What was the primary cash cow for the 1920s gangster? Booze.
In 1933, the 21st amendment was passed, overturning the 18th and making alcohol legal once again.

So fast forward to today…
You have a relatively benign substance (marijuana) that is illegal. And people are being arrested, convicted and shoved in prison for what? Possessing, growing or selling PLANT MATTER. That plant matter won’t kill anyone. It’s not going to poison a water supply. It poses almost no health risks and has genuine medical benefits to some.

So yes, just like the anti-prohibitionists fought to legalize alcohol in the 20s & 30s, groups with the same mentality try to do the same with marijuana today.
Marijuana is unique because it is classified as a highly addictive drug with no medical benefit, both of which are completely false.
To make matters worse, the classification of marijuana was based on racism and the desire for political control. Johnson wanted to control blacks in the 60s, then Nixon wanted to prevent Vietnam protesters from marching on the White House. The common link in their minds was marijuana, which gave law enforcement a reason to round up these “undesirables” so they wouldn’t have to deal with opposition.

Truth ain’t pretty boys, ang girls. Never has been. Never will be.

But anonymous, this site is about a guy trying to quit dope. Its not about you, so what your beef ? Do you still smoke ? Get off your soap box and allow those who do want to stop, for their own reasons to get on with it.

I am gonna ask all the pro-grass dudes who try and interupt this site the same things. Bet you cant quit ! hahaha

“truth aint pretty”

this site has nothing to do with whether marijuana should be legal or not. i’m on day 12 of quitting, but i think marijuana should be legal, even though since i’m quitting, i guess i really don’t care that much either way. anyways, well said, trevor. that was an awesome comment. ha ha ha indeed.

If you read closely I think we SHOULD legalize pot….that way people who need help can do so in the open.

Anonymous, I am not big brother, nor brainwashed, just working hard on ending this nearly 10 year habit. I made this place to share with others going through the same thing…I am not saying marijuana is harmful to you, I am saying it is harmful to me.

Join the forum, you know a lot about cannabis.

It’s pretty pathetic on multiple levels that an individual would come to an addiction support group to advocate their political agenda.

the political debate on marijuana is completely irrelevant to what people are trying to accomplish here. There are certainly much better forums to discuss the benefits and disadvantageous factors of marijuana criminalization.

Your actions here continue to suggest that you suffer from some serious psychological inadequacy issues, ranging from your irrelevant contributions to your petty attempts to portray yourself as intellectually superior.

almost 2 weeks clean, i still would like to see it legalized, but my days of smoking are still over.

Day 5 here, and I’m with you guys – Cannabis should be legal, especially HEMP production for food, fiber, oil, etc. It is such an abundant resource that renew’s the soil automatically and can be harvested nearly 12 months a year – let alone 10x the amount of pulp for paper compared to trees (per acre).

hey all
I never though marijuana smoking would ever bring me to the situation i am right now…i am a heavy pot smoker and still am..but unfortunately,i seem to find myself trapped in my world when i smoke a joint after work , or before..
when i get up from bed in the morning, i think of a joint, inbetween breaks;i think about a joint, never said no to a joint pass and everyday i purchase amount of grass so i could satisfy my head and body the buzz.. but i think it went too far, lately i seem to lack doing some activies, that i really should, but until this day, i fully blame marijuana for it… i am not in anyway against it or have my beliefs for it has changed.
the psychological effect it has on me these weeks is really hearting me..
its really difficult for me to stop.as all my friends nowadays smoke, and as everyday smokers just like me…
i was living alone for a while, then i head back to my parental house, when it was no problem smoking, rather few months later,my mother saw my situation rather the less does not primarly does anything to stop, but advices me to slowly cut it off.
but its really difficult

ps if pot was legal here in my country,i dont think i would have this problem..
iwas student in a very liberal country ( czech rep. ) where weed was everywhere and liberal views about it…

11 Bucking Faked April 8, 2008 at 9:34 pm

Wait a minute, you think if it was LEGAL you wouldn’t have this PSYCHOLOGICAL Addiction????? Think about that for one minute… The problem is not the LAW, that cannot be why you have issues with MJ, unless you are just so remorseful about breaking the law that it kills you inside. If thats the case I better not catch you speeding :) j/k

Any forms of addiction is bad to our health. Whether it has less reactions compared to other drugs, it still affects not just our lives but also to our family and friends lives.

I honestly believe you class yourself as addicted, when you smoke purely to smoke, and are getting really no ‘high’ anymore.
I thought I wasn’t addicted and just did it because I liked it, but do I like it, or am I addicted??
There is a question in everything, and individuals need to decide if they are addicted or controlled.
I have decided I am addicted, therefore I choose to help myself out of it.
I do love pot, I think it should be legal for people to choose to smoke or not, but I will choose not too.

Definately agree with not smoking all you have left if your really ready to quit. It’s like going to war to be at peace with yourself. Day 5 for me now, despite having to relearn how to sleep and eat again, I feel extremely lucky that my motivation behind quitting was catalyzed by the very same spirit I was sure needed me to smoke to be at peace…the biggest problem with smoking for me now is the exact same problem that made me use in the first place…a fear of not escaping myself. Im no longer in a rush to die and encourage everyone to look at the past and future choices with optimism that they could, respectively, be much worse or may become much better. Gratitude’s what it sounds like…a great-attitude. :o

This is how “addiction” was once defined to me: anything you cannot stop. This brings a lot of interesting questions into the fold. Are we addicted to breathing, drinking, and eating? Also, what if you really don’t want to stop? I think that if you honestly have no intentions of quitting, don’t deceive yourself, and truthfully think that marijuana is beneficial to your life, then you are not addicted. It’s nice to think that sobriety is for everyone, but unfortunately life is very mundane for some of us. When one thinks of all the incredibly destructive drugs and behaviors out there, marijuana has to be seen as the “lesser evil.” Marijuana is the worst drug out there, next to all the others! I’m not advocating it’s use, just that people shouldn’t feel so guilty and brand themselves as addicts if it is something that keeps them sane and helps them avoid more destructive substances and behaviors.
